Makalyn Poole Wins AU Invitational; Trojans Finish as Runners-Up

ANDERSON, S.C. - Freshman Makalyn Poole overcame a one-shot deficit by carding a 3-over-par 75 and won individual medalist honors, while leading the Anderson University women's golf team to second place at the AU Invitational, hosted by the Trojans at the par-72, 5,825-yard Cobb's Glen layout.

"I'm very excited and proud for both of our teams today," said Anderson head coach Danny Neal. "For the men to play two solid, steady rounds on a challenging course and come away with a victory was outstanding. And for Grayson Bell to make the All-Tournament team as a freshman was impressive. The women played a great tournament, finishing second in a strong field. And for Makalyn Poole to be the medalist in her first-ever collegiate tournament is very special. We hope to build on this momentum and continue to improve and compete the rest of the season."

Poole, a native of Williamston, S.C., overcame first-round leader Sydney Gallant of Lincoln Memorial to become the first Trojan women's golfer in school history to claim the AU Invitational title. Poole recorded a pair of birdies and 11 pars during Tuesday's final round to earn the two-shot victory. She posted a two-day 8-over-par 152, while Gallant slipped to a 10-over-par 152 for the tournament.

Lincoln Memorial led the tournament wire-to-wire to claim the team title by 14 shots over the Trojans, who posted their highest finish since placing third in both 2010 and 211. Lenoir-Rhyne remained in third, while Erskine and Emmanuel swapped places, with the Flying Fleet jumping into fourth and the Lions dropping to fifth. North Greenville, Brevard and Spartanburg Methodist rounded out the field.

Anderson senior Braiden Furtick led the field with seven birdies and reached par on 13 holes over the two-day event, as the Lexington, S.C., native fired a two-round 161 and shared seventh place. Sophomore Riley Lovorn trimmed five strokes off her opening round to post a two-day 169, while moving from a tie for 23rd into 16th place. Freshman Tiffany Elam improved by three shots and finished in a tie for 23rd, alongside fellow freshman Blake Hodges, who also carded a two-day 173.

After a three-week layoff, the Trojans are scheduled to compete in the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate on Oct. 5-6, at the Ocean Ridge Plantation in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.
