Women’s Golf in Ninth after Opening Round of Illinois-Springfield’s Island Getaway

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - Paced by senior Braiden Furtick's 9-over-par 80, the Anderson women's golf team is in ninth place following first-round action of the Illinois-Springfield Island Getaway on Monday, hosted by the Prairie Stars at the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar par-71, 6,055-yard Ocean Course layout.

Indianapolis (304) leads the 12-team event by three strokes over Arkansas Tech (307), while St. Edward's and West Texas A & M share the third spot after both teams carded identical 309s on the day. Host Illinois-Springfield (314) is five shots further back in fifth, with Drury (317) holding the sixth slot.

Southern Indiana (318) and Texas Wesleyan (318) are tied for seventh, with Anderson in ninth place with a first-round 326. Central Missouri (337), Jackson State (366) and St. Joseph's College (392) round out the field.

West Texas A & M's Whitlee Woods leads the hunt for individual medalist honors after firing a 2-over-par 73, while Arkansas Tech's Avery Struck and Payton DeHaven are both one shot off the pace at the two-day event. There are six additional golfers within three shots of the lead.

Furtick is in a seven-way tie for 26th following her first-round 80, while the freshman duo of Makalyn Poole and Tiffany Elam are one shot further back in a tie for 33rd. Sophomore Riley Lovorn carded an 84 and is tied for 41st, with freshman Blake Hodges sharing the 43rd spot after carding an opening-round 85.

Tuesday's final round is slated to get underway at 7:30 a.m.
