Women’s Golf Takes Sole Possession of Eighth Place after Second Day of SAC Championship

MONROE, N.C. - Led by freshman Makalyn Poole's second round 7-over-par 79, the Anderson women's golf team is eighth after the second day of the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Championship, hosted by Wingate on the par-72, 5,981-yard Monroe Country Club layout.

Queens University of Charlotte, which was tied with Wingate following Sunday's opening round, is bidding for its first SAC title after joining the conference in 2014, while posting a two-day 625 and leads defending champion Carson-Newman by six shots.

Carson-Newman is seeking its fourth championship and holds the second spot with a 631. Newberry (637) jumped from fifth to third and trails Queens by 12 strokes. Lincoln Memorial entered the second round tied with Carson-Newman atop the scoreboard, but slipped to fourth with a two-day 638. The host Bulldogs (639) fell to fifth from third, with Tusculum (652) moving into sixth. Coker (660), Anderson (664), Lenoir-Rhyne (667), Mars Hill (682) and Brevard (747) round out the 11-team field.

Newberry's Nabila Inak (147), who is the only golfer in the field to break par in the first two rounds with 1-under-par 71 on Monday, enters Tuesday's final round with a one-shot lead on Queens' Grace Glaze (148), as both golfers moved up from a tie for fourth place. Carson-Newman's Taylor Hayes (150) topped the field on Sunday, but slipped to third and trails Inak by three shots.

Aided by a birdie on No. 15, Poole (163) trimmed five strokes off her first-round effort and shares the 21st spot. Sophomore Riley Lovorn (165) is in a three-way tie for 27th, while freshman Tiffany Elam (168) slashed six strokes from the first round and is tied for 39th. Senior Braiden Furtick shares a five-way tie for 42nd with a two-day 170 and freshman Blake Hodges is five shots further back with a two-day 175.
