Women’s Golf Finishes 12th at Tusculum/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Led by freshman Tiffany Elam's two-day 19-over-par 163, the Anderson women's golf team was consistent with its final round and moved up two spots to claim 12th at the 14th annual Tusculum/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate. The two-day event was hosted by the Pioneers at the par 72, 5,825 yard Cougar Point Golf Club layout.

On a day when ten squads in the 16-team field struggled and posted higher scores than in Saturday's opening round, the Trojans posted 335s in each round to move ahead of both Lenoir-Rhyne and Belmont Abbey, while leading the host Pioneers and Barton for the second straight day.

Armstrong State overcame a six-shot deficit to win the event. The Pirates finished with a two-day score of 629, including a final round 318 on Sunday to edge defending champion Florida Southern (305-327=632) by three strokes. ASU placed two players in the top five as Armstrong captures its first ever Tusculum/Kiawah Intercollegiate title.

West Alabama's Jessica Smyth captured medalist honors with her 36-hole score of 74-78=152, just one shot better than runner-up Pamela Mosley of Armstrong (73-80=153). Joining Smyth and Mosley on the All-Tournament Team were Wingate's LeAnn Domtrovits, Lenoir-Rhyne's Abbey Hartsell and Belmont Abbey's Kaitlyn Gribbon.

Gribbon was one of six golfers tied for the fifth at 156 for All-Tournament honors as she earned the final sport via a playoff. Also finishing fifth were Nikita Arjun (Armstrong State), Amanda Floberg (Pfeiffer), Sydney Gallant (Lincoln Memorial), Ashilii Thompson (UNC Pembroke) and Abbey Williams (Florida Southern).

Lincoln Memorial finished third in the team competition with 642, followed by West Alabama (643), UNC Pembroke (6460, Wingate (649), Converse (652), Carson-Newman (655), Pfeiffer (655), Faulkner (660), Newberry (667), Anderson (670), Tusculum (678), Belmont Abbey (680), Lenoir-Rhyne (681) and Barton (701).

Elam (83-80=163) trimmed three strokes off Saturday's opening round and moved from sharing the 44th spot into a tie for 26th. Sophomore Riley Lovorn (80-84=164), who led the Trojans' first-round efforts, slipped four spots into a tie for 29th, while freshman Makalyn Poole (81-83=164) also shared the eight-way tie for 29th.

Senior Braiden Furtick (91-88=179) slashed three strokes from her first-round scorecard and finished in a four-way tie for 69th. Freshman Blake Hodges cut two shot off her opening round and shared 73rd after firing a two-day 180.

The Trojans are slated to return to the links on Monday, Feb. 22 at the Converse Spring Invitational, which will be hosted at the Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C.
