ROCK HILL, S.C. - On the eve of the South Atlantic Conference Women's Golf Championship, Anderson standout freshman Makalyn Poole has been named Second-Team All-Conference, as announced by the league office late Friday morning.
Poole, a native of Williamston, S.C., made a stellar first impression in her collegiate debut by overcoming a one-shot deficit to become the first Trojan women's golfer in school history to win the AU Invitational last September.
She posted a 75 on the final day at Cobb's Glen for her low round of the year, while leading the team with a 79.43 stroke average during the campaign. Poole competed in all seven events and also garnered a tie for seventh at the converse Spring Invitational in February, while finishing no lower than 30th on the year.
Queens' Grace Glaze was voted the Women's Golfer of the Year, while Abbey Hartsell from Lenoir-Rhyne was named the Conference's Freshman of the Year. In addition, Carson-Newman mentor Suzanne Strudwick was tabbed the Coach of the Year.
Glaze, a senior from Clemson, S.C., turned in the lowest adjusted scoring in the South Atlantic Conference this season as she posted an average of 77.41 strokes per round. She finished in the top 10 in five tournaments this season, including a two medalist honors in a pair of tournaments this season. She finished in the top five in four tournaments this season and turned in a career-best one-under 72 this past spring. Glaze led her squad to five top three finishes during the 2015-16 campaign as the Royals took home the tournament crown at the Cherokee Invitational.
Hartsell finished No. 2 in the League with an adjusted scoring average of 77.61. The Taylorsville, N.C. native fired a four-under 68 in the second round of the Hilton Lakes Invitational to tie for the lowest ever round in South Atlantic Conference history. She finished second overall at the Tusculum Fall Classic to lead the Bears to a runner-up finish at the event. She also placed third overall at the Hilton Lakes Invitational and tied for fifth at the Wingate Intercollegiate Challenge this past spring.
Strudwick earns her second South Atlantic Conference Coach of
the Year honor after she led her squad to four top three finishes
during the 2015-16 campaign. Her team finished in the top 10 in
six events this season and was in the top 15 in every event the
Eagles played. Carson-Newman finished second at the Smokey Mountain
Intercollegiate and also turned in a runner-up finish at the Lady
Flames Shootout.
