Men's Lacrosse Defeats Coker 18-15 to Clinch Winning 2022 Season

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Anderson University men's lacrosse team ended their regular season slate with an 18-15 victory over Coker University in Hartsville, S.C. on Friday (Apr. 22).

The Trojans entered the contest with a record of 8-7, including a 4-5 clip in South Atlantic Conference play. In the two final home matches of the season, the Trojans came up short in two highly competitive losses to Newberry and Queens.

Looking to get back in the win column, Anderson ended the first period on a high note with four unanswered goals to close the period out to take a 5-3 lead. That momentum carried over into the second period as the Trojans outscored the Cobras 8-4, led by three goals from Triston Schaffer.

Schaffer continued his stellar play in the third period as he scored three more times, finishing the night with a season high of nine goals. The Trojan defense continued to hold strong as goalie Joey Heckel finished the night with 12 saves, leading Anderson to the 18-15 win over Coker.

Freshman Triston Schaffer led both teams with nine goals. Beau Henson, Ryley Zopfi, and Logan Gaddis each had two. Gaddis dished out four assists, while Collin Martin and Tyler Barlan each caused two turnovers.

"It was a great team win tonight to end the 2022 season," said coach Albert Mitchell. "To be able to finish the season with a winning record in a tough conference like the SAC is exciting for our program. We now turn our focus to the summer to grow individually and come back stronger as a team in 2023."

This concludes the 2022 season for the Trojans. With the win over Coker, Anderson ends the campaign with a 9-7 record and a 5-5 clip in the SAC. It was a memorable second year for the men's lacrosse program, which included being ranked 19th in the national United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll and upsetting third ranked Wingate on March 19th.
