Trojan Rally Falls Short 14-13 in Loss to Newberry

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University men's lacrosse team came up short 14-13 to the Newberry Wolves on Wednesday (Apr. 13) at Spero Financial Field.

The Trojans entered the contest with an 8-5 record, and a 6-2 mark at home including six consecutive wins. Anderson led 4-3 after the first period of play, with goals from Garrett Hawkins, Beau Henson, Logan Gaddis, and Jack Goldstein. Newberry and Anderson traded goals back and forth in the second period, with AU leading 7-6 going into halftime.

Newberry started the third quarter with four unanswered goals, outscoring Anderson five to one in the quarter. The Wolves added two more goals to open the fourth quarter, to take a commanding 13-8 lead. After a timeout, the Trojans regrouped and started a rally of their own.

A pair of man-up goals from Nick Calabrese and Ryley Zopfi swung momentum back into Anderson's direction. With four minutes remaining, Garrett Hawkins scored his third goal of the evening to cut the deficit to 14-13. However, the Newberry defense held strong to clinch the victory.

Garrett Hawkins and Ryley Zopfi each scored three goals, while Nick Calabrese and Beau Henson finished with two apiece. Collin Martin caused two turnovers, and goalie Joey Heckel totaled 16 saves.

The Trojans will close out the regular season home slate on Saturday (Apr. 16) when they play host to Queens University. Opening faceoff is set for 1:00 p.m., with video and live stats available at www.autrojans.com.
