Men’s Golf Wraps up Fall Slate with Program-Record Fourth Consecutive Tournament Championship

TOCCOA, Ga. – Behind the ninth-lowest three-round score in program history, the Anderson University men's golf team built an early lead, then held off a late Lincoln Memorial surge to capture the first-ever McCoy Wright Currahee Collegiate Invitational, Tuesday at the Currahee Club.

"We are so excited for this group of young men," said Anderson Associate Head Coach Denton Moore. "This fall has been the most historic run in our program's history. We had four events on the schedule this season and we won them all. This group has been phenomenal all season. This week at Currahee we were basically perfect through the opening two rounds. All five guys played fantastic and consistent through the first two rounds. Today, the conditions got windy, and we got off to a very poor start. The eight-shot lead disappeared quickly. I can't say enough about the play today of Parker MacDonald, Alejandro De Castro, and Calahan Keever. They were all 2-4 over par early on and things looked very shaky. They battled back to shoot well and saved the win for us. Reece and Daniel didn't have their best today, but they were both special yesterday. Once again, our depth shined through this week. You have to have all five guys playing well to win a tournament."

Anderson and Erskine co-hosted the first-ever two-day, 54-hole event on a par-72, 7,513-yard layout, with nearly every team in the 15-team field receiving votes in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll, with seven of the top 16 squads in the nation, including four of the top 10 teams in the nation.

The Trojans, who were ranked seventh nationally in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll, led wire-to-wire and finished three strokes ahead of runner-up Lincoln Memorial, who was ranked ninth. No. 4 North Georgia was four shots further back in third place, while Barton moved up four spots and claimed fourth place. Columbus State remained fifth, with 16th-ranked Lander and No. 15 Clayton State finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. No. 14 Carson-Newman claimed the eighth slot, with Coker finishing in ninth place.

Limestone, which was ranked 10th, finished in 10th place, while Erskine, Belmont Abbey, Newberry, Young Harris and King finished out the 15-team field.

Lincoln Memorial's Harry Lord (69-71-72=212) overcame a two-stroke deficit following Monday's opening round and took home individual medalist honors by one shot over both Clayton State's Felipe Gomez (70-70-73=213) and Carson-Newman's Hayden Hunneke (75-71-67=213), who shared the runner-up spot. Hunneke climbed 13 spots up the leaderboard over the final two rounds. Five additional golfers finished three strokes off the pace set by Lord.

Junior Calahan Keever and senior Parker MacDonald paced the Trojans by finished in a tie for 11th place after each carded 1-over 217s, with senior Reece Coleman finishing in a six-way tie for 15th place, alongside freshman Alejandro de Castro, who moved 10 spots up the individual leaderboard. Junior Daniel Coker rounded out the Trojan contingent in a tie for 42nd.

"All five guys played great all fall season," added Moore. "And that's why we won four in a row. I just can't tell you how proud Coach Neal and I are of this team. They have been so good all year, and they finished it off in perfect style this week. They should be ranked No. 1 in the nation tomorrow morning. Hopefully Golfstat will acknowledge the fall season these guys just had. I know there isn't a coach or team in the country that doesn't think we aren't the number one team in the country."

The Trojans are scheduled to open their spring schedule at Lincoln Memorial's Spring Kick-off, Feb. 13-14, at the St. John's Golf Club in Fleming Island, Fla.
