Mount Olive Takes Two From Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Mount Olive reliever Bryan Corbett got Donavon Schmidt to fly out to end the second game to give the visiting Trojans a 4-3 victory and a sweep of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Because of the heavy rain in the Anderson area on Thursday and Friday, the two teams played a single game on Saturday night and a pair of seven-inning games on Sunday. In the first game, Mount Olive collected 14 hits against three Anderson pitchers and Stephen Norden, Jonathan Pullen, and Anthony Williams drove in two runs apiece to lead Mount Olive to a 10-4 victory. Mount Olive improves to 18-22 overall and 10-11 in the CVAC, while Anderson falls to 16-24, 5-12. Mount Olive had a 4-1 lead entering the bottom of the seventh in the second game, but Anderson refused to go quietly. Jeremy McCauley led off with a double. After a pop out and a line out, Jacob Reid singled between third base and shortstop to score McCauley. Jonathan Pitts then reached on an infield single to knock out Donald Huff, the second Mount Olive pitcher of the game, and bring on Corbett. F.A. Vildosola greeted Huff with a run-scoring single, but then Huff got Schmidt to fly out to end the game. Mount Olive scored two runs in the third on a leadoff triple by Dustin Richardson, a one-out RBI single by Williams, and a single by Ricky Davis. Williams scored the second run on a delayed steal. In the first game, Mount Olive broke open a tight game with five runs in the fifth and cruised to a 10-4 victory. Anderson took a 3-2 lead in the third on a one-out double by Pitts and an RBI single by Vildosola. Mount Olive tied the game in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Josh Carter. In the fifth, Mount Olive sent nine batters to plate and scored five runs to take an 8-3 lead. Richardson and Nordan both had RBI singles and Pullen had a two-run double. In the top of the sixth, Williams had an run-scoring triple and then scored on a double by North to give Mount Olive a 10-3 lead. Mount Olive had 26 hits in the two games, seven for extra bases. Mount Olive received a solid pitching performance from Justin Staaz in the first game. Staaz scattered eight hits in seven innings, struck out six, and walked four to pick up the victory.
