ANDERSON, S.C. - Cody Nye and Jeremy McCauley drove in three runs apiece to lead Anderson College to a 9-6 victory over USC Upstate Tuesday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Anderson, 15-21 overall, snapped a three-game losing streak by scoring eight runs in the first four innings than hanging on in the final three innings. Nye, a junior from Saluda, was 2-for-4 with a two-run double and a run-scoring single, while McCauley, a senior from Pelzer, was 1-for-2 with a two-run double and a sacrifice fly. USC Upstate, 21-14 overall, managed just six hits against five Anderson pitchers. Anderson finished the game with 11 hits, six for extra bases. Both pitching staffs struggled to find the plate. There was a total of 18 walks - 11 by Anderson and seven by USC Upstate. Anderson also had four wild pitches and hit two batters. But just three of the three of the walks received by the Spartans came home to score as Anderson turned four double plays and did not commit an error. The Spartans left five runners on base in the final three innings. Two walks, two wild pitches, and a single by Kyle Bowley brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth, but Eric Davis grounded into a double play to end the game. Anderson starter and winner Desmond Robson (4-1) allowed two runs, walked three, and hit one batter in the first two innings but then settled down to retire nine of the next 11 before he was lifted after five innings. USC Upstate starter Ryan Poss allowed five hits and seven earned runs in 2 1/3 innings to get tagged with the loss. The Spartans climbed back in the game in the seventh against Anderson reliever Michael Farotto by scoring two runs to cut the Anderson lead to 8-5. With one out, Brian Discordia reached on an infield single. After a strikeout, three walks and a wild pitch pushed two runs across. Will Cheatham, the fourth Anderson pitcher of the game, entered with the bases loaded and got Davis to fly out to center to end the inning. Trailing 8-2, Upstate got one run back in the sixth on a lead-off triple by Bret Hansen and a ground out. The Trojans increased their lead to 8-2 in the fourth on a RBI single by F.A. Vildosola. Anderson added three more runs in the third for a 7-2 lead on a double by Donavon Schmidt, two walks, a two-run double by Nye, and a sacrifice fly by McCauley. The Trojans added three runs in the second to take a 4-2 lead on a two-run double by McCauley and a run-scoring single by Jacob Reid. The Spartans took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second on a walk, a triple by Jim Kais, and a sacrifice fly by Discordia. Anderson opened the scoring with a single run in the home half of the first on a lead-off home run to left by Caleb Owen. The homer was Owen's first of the season.
