Robson Blanks No. 5 Kennesaw, Trojans, Owls Split

KENNESAW, Ga. -- No. 5-ranked Kennesaw State scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to steal the nightcap 6-5 over Anderson College and salvage a split of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Stillwell Stadium. Anderson won the first game, 5-0. Game one saw the Owls (4-1) get shutout behind a masterful game by Anderson starter Desmond Robson (1-0), as he went the distance for the Trojans, giving up only four hits, striking out four, and allowing only one Owl runner to reach third base. The Trojans (2-4) did most of their damage in the top of the fourth inning when they put up four runs on three hits and a costly KSU error. A fielding miscue by Owl shortstop Ryan Perry allowed Clint Neville (1-for-4) to reach base with one out. F.A. Vildosola (2-for-4) then singled and was followed by a hit batsman, which loaded the bases. Jonathon Pitts (1-for-3) grounded out to Owl starter Matthew Eckardt to drive in the first run, and after a walk to Kyle Lewis (0-for-2), Creg Green (2-for-3) laced a single to left field to score two more runs. Jacob Reid (2-for-4), the ninth hitter of the inning, drove in the fourth run with an infield single. The Trojans added one more run to the lead in the fifth inning when Vildosola singled, advanced to third on a double by Cody Nye (1-for-3) and came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Pitts. The Owls tried to mount a final inning rally in the seventh when two straight errors by the Trojans put runners on first and second with no outs. But Robson, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound native of Easley, S.C., buckled down by getting Andy Hudson (0-for-2)to foul out and pinch hitter Jay Morrow (0-for-1) to strike out. After a single by Mahal De Castro (1-for-1) loaded the bases, Robson enticed Jeremy Brotherton (0-for-4) into an infield pop up for the third out, ending the rally. Eckardt (1-1) was saddled with the hard-luck loss, giving up four runs, all unearned, on four hits. Game two started out like much of the same, with Anderson jumping all over the Owls first inning. KSU starter Mike Bohana got into trouble with a walk to leadoff hitter Jacob Reid (1-for-2) and then two straight singles to Jeremy McCauley (2-for-4) and Donovan Schmidt (1-for-4). After a strikeout of Neville, Vildosola (1-for-3) connected on a long home run over the right field wall for the grand slam and a 4-0 lead. KSU answered in the bottom of the second inning with four runs of its own behind two hits, three walks and two hit batsmen. Jon Love (2-for-4) started the inning with a one-out single and advanced to third when Hudson (0-for-2) and Morrow (0-for-3) both walked. After a DeCastro (0-for-3) strikeout, shortstop John Kokotajlo (1-for-2) sent a blast that just grazed the glove of Schmidt at second base, scoring both Love and Hudson. Adrian Colton (0-for-2) and Scott Hendrix (1-for-2) drove in the next two runs when they were hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Anderson took the lead in the sixth inning on a Reid RBI-single into centerfield, scoring Pitts (1-for-3). The Owls tied in the seventh when Love led off with a triple and scored on a balk by Trojan reliever Will Cheatham (0-1). Derrick Tucker (0-for-0) then drew a walk and advanced to third when Cheatham bounced a pick-off attempt to Vildosola at first base. Morrow then grounded a sharp ball to Pitts at third base, who bobbled the ball and tried a hurried throw to first base. The throw however was low and bounced all the way to the fence, allowing Tucker to easily score the winning run. Brent Jackson (1-0), who pitched the top of the seventh inning, was awarded the win.
