Pembroke Completes Sweep Of Anderson

PEMBROKE, N.C. -- Freshman third baseman Jason Morales delivered the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead UNC Pembroke to a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over Anderson College on Sunday afternoon at Braves Field. Pembroke completed the series sweep of the Trojans and remains undefeated at 5-0 on the season. Anderson falls to 0-3. The Trojans took an early 1-0 lead in the first. With two outs, UNCP right-fielder Tripp Lockhart barely missed making a diving catch that AC's Donovan Schmidt turned into a double. After catcher Clint Neville drew a walk, F.A. Vildosola fisted a two-out single to right field that scored Schmidt for the game's first run. Anderson starting pitcher Desmond Robson stifled the Braves offense over the first five innings, allowing no hits and only three baserunners. Seth Thompson preserved the no-hitter with a diving stop in the fourth. The Trojans struck again in the top of the sixth. Vildosola picked up his second RBI of the day with a double to left-center that scored Neville, who had reached on an infield single, giving Anderson a 2-0 lead. UNCP finally broke through with two hits in the sixth. Cole Franks beat out a grounder to Thompson for and infield single, and Robbie Redic quickly followed with a liner to right. Robson then forced Lockhart to fly out, ending the inning and keeping the shutout in tact. However, Pembroke would break up Robson's shutout bid in the following inning. Chris Beck led off the seventh with a walk, and Morales then ripped a single in the hole between short and third. Aaron Perkins followed with a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the first baseman. That same error allowed Beck to plate the Braves first run and left Morales on third. Ty Morris then collected a sacrifice fly RBI to tie the game at 2. Anderson threatened in the eighth against UNCP's Sandy Jacobs. With runners at first and second and no outs, Jacobs forced a ground out and inning-ending 6-4-3 double play. The stage was then set for Morales' heroics. With Brad Owens on to pitch for the Trojans, Cole Franks led off the inning with a single up the middle. Owens then retired Robbie Redic on a pop-up, but Franks stole second. Two subsequent walks loaded the bases for Morales, who roped a liner to center that scored Franks and proved to be the game-winning RBI. Perkins followed Morales with a sac-fly RBI that secured the 4-2 final. Jacobs threw two scoreless innings to pick up the win for the Braves. Starter Tyson Van Dam went seven complete innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out six. Owens took the loss for Anderson.
