Fleet Takes Two; Clinches AC-Erskine Cup

DUE WEST, S.C. -- Erskine College swept a Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference doubleheader from Anderson College Friday afternoon. The Flying Fleet won the first game, 12-3; and then took the nightcap, 6-5. The sweep clinched the 2004-05 AC-Erskine Cup Sponsored By ARAMARK for Erskine. The Cup will be presented to Erskine in late April. Erskine scored 10 runs in a three-inning span to cruise to the victory in first game. Wes Edwards led the Fleet, going 3-for-5 with a double and five RBI, while Casey Smith and Antonio Sabatini each hit solo home runs in the victory. Jonathan Merrell picked up his second straight victory, allowing two earned runs in 7.1 innings of work and striking out four. Anderson was led at the plate by Caleb Owen, who was 2-for-4 with a double, while Jacob Reid, Jonathan Pitts, and Clint Neville each had a hit and RBI for the Trojans. Desmond Robson took the loss, allowing seven runs in 3.1 innings of work. Anderson would jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the second game with an RBI double by Jessie Whiteside followed by a RBI single from F.A. Vildosola. The Fleet would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a three-run home run by senior Brent Mahaffey, but the Trojans would tie the game up in the fifth on a lead off home run by Whiteside. The Fleet answered the Trojan rally with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, capped off by a two RBI single by Smith. Anderson scored two runs in the sixth but could not tie the game up as Jake Williams came in the seventh inning and picked up his third save of the season. Russell Reid picked up his fourth win of the season allowing four runs in 5.1 innings of work, while Nat McCarty took the loss, allowing six runs in six innings of work for the Trojans. Erskine improves to 27-10 overall and 11-6 in the CVAC, while Anderson falls to 14-20 and 4-9. Release Courtesy of Erskine SID
