Lady Trojans Stay Unbeaten In Conference Play

HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- With just two minutes remaining in the first overtime period, Anderson University broke the 0-0 stalemate with a goal from Virginia Cates to take a 1-0 victory over Coker in a Conference Carolinas match Saturday afternoon. Anderson, 6-2 overall and 3-0 in Conference Carolinas, is off to its best start ever in league play. Overall, the Lady Trojans got off to a 7-2 start in 2002. The victory moves Anderson into a first-place tie in the Conference Carolinas standings with Pfeiffer and Belmont Abbey. "Lynne (Flint) played the ball to Ginny on the back line and she made a great finish to the far left post," said Anderson head coach Jason Dowiak. "But the story of the day was our defense. Kelli (Whitfield) made several amazing saves, including stopping a breakaway and making a diving save, and Lisa Taylor controlled the middle." Whitfield made eight saves to earn the shutout. The goal was Cates' sixth of the season and her second game-winning goal in overtime. The loss drops Coker to 3-5, 1-4. Anderson University Women's Soccer Statistics
