Cates' Goal Gives AU Victory In OT

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Virginia Cates took at header from Kelli Johnson and scored at the 93:18 mark to give Anderson University a 2-1 victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian in the Conference Carolinas opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Smethers Field. "We had a lot of players step and play full time, and our offense finally got turned on in the second half," said Anderson head coach Jason Dowiak. "Crystal Gaffney has played every minute of every game this season and Ginny Cates is playing injured. That's the kind of stuff you hope for from your captains." Anderson, 3-2 overall and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas, trailed 1-0 after Marie Savage blasted a shot from the right wing to the give Knights the lead at the 60:10 mark. Anderson's attack kept constant pressure on St. Andrews in the final 30 minutes. Anderson had several opportunities that were turned away by St. Andrews goalkeeper Garrison Burton. "In the second half, we created a lot of opportunities," Dowiak said. "We have a lot of confidence in everybody on the team. We're struggling for numbers right now because of injuries, but our players are showing a lot of heart." But at the 81:11 mark, the Lady Trojans finally broke through when Lynne Flint took a run down the left side and scored the equalizer. After Flint was turned away by Burton at a break away opportunity two minutes into overtime, Johnson placed a header in the box that Cates put in the back of the net for the game winner. Anderson outshot St. Andrews, 14-12. Kelli Whitfield made five saves for Anderson, while Burton finished with seven saves for St. Andrews. The loss drops St. Andrews to 0-3, 0-1.
