Lady Trojans Bounce Bobcats, 4-2

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Virginia Cates scored two goals and Lynne Flint and Brooke Jackson both contributed one goal and one assist to lead Anderson University to a 4-2 victory over Lees-McRae in a Conference Carolinas match Saturday afternoon at Smethers Field. Anderson, 4-2 overall and 2-0 in Conference Carolinas, dominated play in the second half. The Lady Trojans scored three goals in a 21-minute span to put the match away. "Our commitment on both attack and defense is amazing," said Anderson head coach Jason Dowiak. "That shows our dedication to the team and that commitment is helping us be competitive." Cates, a junior from Byron, Mich., opened the scoring at 10:45 when she took a pass from freshman Katelyn Conover and scored on a breakaway. Lees-McRae tied the match at 1 at the 29:33 mark. Abby White connected with Maribeth Novak, who put the ball in the back of the AU net. Cates tallied her second goal off a pass from freshman Lynne Flint at 48:12. Cates now has five goals and two game-winning goals this season. Anderson increased its lead to 3-1 at the 63:26 mark when Flint took a pass from fellow freshman Brooke Jackson and put it away. Jackson got the final Anderson goal at the 69:32 mark. Conover played a pass over the top of the defense and Jackson fought through two defenders to score. Novak scored her second goal of the match at 82:35 on a penalty kick. "Our players are playing to their strengths," Dowiak said.
