Lady Trojans Overwhelm SMC

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Larissa Fedorowich had one goal and two assists and Ginny Cates added one goal and one assist to lead Anderson University to a 5-0 victory over Spartanburg Methodist Wednesday afternoon. Anderson, 1-1 overall, jumped out a 2-0 lead in the first half and cruised to its first victory of the season. "We started things off with an excellent opportunity in the opening minutes of the match on a through ball from Ginny to Kelli Johnson, but Kelli's shot just missed high. Continuing to pressure Spartanburg Methodist in their defensive third, Kelli received a second chance in the ninth minute and put it in the net for the first goal of her career." In the 33rd minute, Fedorowich connected with Lynne Flint, and Flint knocked home the first goal of her career. Just three minutes into the second half, Fedorowich scored her goal to increase the Anderson lead to 3-0. "Larissa's shot was nicely placed low in the corner," Dowiak said. Nine minutes later, Cates scored her goal off an assist from Fedorowich. Cates assisted on the final goal when she found Kristi Wilkins on a run. "Ginny beat her mark down the right flank and served it to Kristi, who timed her run perfectly and fired a low volley into the back of the net," Dowiak said. Calle McCallister and Jen Shideler shared the shutout for Anderson. McCallister came up with four strong saves in 70 minutes. "We had a strong defensive effort," Dowiak said. "Center back Lisa Taylor recorded one goal line save; and outside back Katelyn Conover was the only player to play the full 90 minutes. Crystal Gaffney helped settle us down in the second half and established some much needed organization in the midfield." Anderson's next match is Saturday at Warren Wilson.
