Dowiak Faces Former Team In Opener

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson University head women's soccer coach Jason Dowiak will lead the Lady Trojans against his former team -- Lander -- in the 2007 season opener for both schools Friday night at Smethers Field. The match will begin at 7 p.m. Dowiak, who was named Anderson's head coach in July, was an assistant at Lander last season. "Coming into a new coaching position with 20 or so player that you've never met is a difficult task," Dowiak said. "There are a lot of questions to be answered. I think a lot of questions were answered in our first two-hour practice. Our skill level is quality. Our leadership is some of the best I have seen. As for the new players fitting in, not only do they fit in, but they complement our returning core beautifully." Dowiak was pleased with the effort his team gave him during the preseason. "I'm excited to have such a solid group of players who don't know the meaning of taking it easy," he said. "We had players fighting for positions and working beyond their limits to prove their worth and commitment to our program. I have been amazed and impressed since the first day." Anderson's '07 captains will be midfielder Crystal Gaffney, defender Mandy English, and forward Ginny Cates. "Crystal's attitude encourages and demands the highest level of quality from herself and her teammates," Dowiak said. "Mandy played most of last season injured. She is happy to be healthy and ready to lead us. Ginny pumps some much needed firepower and energy into our offense." Also returning is Larissa Fedorowich, who led the Lady Trojans in goals last season, and starting goalkeeper Kelli Whitfield.
