Lady Trojans Drop Season Opener

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Jannica Finnberg scored one goal and had one assist to lead Lander to a 3-0 victory over Anderson University in the opening match for both teams Friday night at Smethers Field. "Although we started off a bit slow and unorganized, we showed good maturity to not lose our composure under strong pressure from Lander," said Anderson head coach Jason Dowiak. "Kelli Whitfield showed extremely well in her '07 opener with 8 saves, and Larissa Fedorowich created havoc for the Lander backs all night. Losing is always tough to handle, but now that we know where we need to improve I feel confident we will be prepared to face Spartanburg Methodist on Sept. 29th." Lander scored its first goal at 34:58 when Valarie Smith scored off a rebound. The score remained 1-0 until the 59:59 mark when Finnberg scored on a header off a corner kick from Stacey Copeland. The Bearcats scored their final goal at the 74:08 mark when Christin Moss scored off a cross from Jessica Skowron. Lander goalkeeper Rachael Hine made two saves to earn the shutout. Anderson's next match is Wednesday at Spartanburg Methodist.
