Trojans Defeat Young Harris In Season Home Opener; 85-73

ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson University women's basketball moved to 3-0 on the season winning its home opener over nonconference opponent Young Harris (1-1), 85-73, on Friday evening at the Abney Athletic Center.

"We are lucky that you don't have to label a win as pretty or ugly, you just call it a win," said head coach Jonathon Barbaree. "When we played our way, we played well, but that wasn't as often as I like."

"Defensively, we need to continue to improve and guard the ball better," emphasized Barbaree. "Then we need to finish the plays by boxing out."

"Good news is that we get to come right back and do it all over again tomorrow," added Barbaree.

Anderson's junior Diamond McDowell recorded her second double-double of the season after scoring a game-high 21 points and ripping down 15 rebounds. Graduate Brittney Stafford scored 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including four three-point baskets. Sophomore Ashlyn Sheridan netted 15 points, three rebounds and two steals for the Black and Gold. Senior Nelliah Wilson chipped in eight points, while pulling down 12 rebounds.

Young Harris placed four players in double-digit scoring with JaMari Frederick scoring a team-high 20 points.

After a slow start on the boards, AU outrebounded the Mountain Lions, 46-43.

The Black and Gold remain at home to face-off with nonconference opponent Emmanuel on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 2 pm.
