Lander Ends AC's Winning Streak At Four

GREENWOOD, S.C. - William Dudley pitched five strong innings and Corey Reed drove in three runs, leading the Lander Bearcats to an 8-2 non-conference victory over Anderson College Wednesday night. Dudley allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out six. Jeremy Ray, Mike Sammis, Tyler Addison, David Wilson and Corey Watkins finished the game off in relief. Lander (23-9) took a 1-0 lead in the second when Bob Fenn doubled to left center, moved to third on Ryan Roeder's fly ball to right, and scored on a ground out to third by Mike Fears. Dudley (2-0) cruised through the first four innings in his second start of the season, striking out five and allowing only one base runner on a walk. Kyle Lewis led off the top of the fifth with Anderson's first hit. After a walk and another hit to load the bases, Caleb Owen beat out an infield single to score the tying run. The Bearcats regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth off Trojans reliever Nat McCarty. Jason Spivey drew a two-out walk, Greg Smith doubled to left, and David Walton singled up the middle to drive in both runners, making it 3-1. Lander added three runs in the sixth off Anderson reliever Brett Youngblood. Fenn was hit by a pitch, Roeder singled, and pinch hitter Jeremy Ryals bunted the runners to second and third. Jeff Whitfield singled home one run and Roeder scored on a throwing error by the left fielder. Reed singled home Whitfield to make it 6-1. Anderson (10-21) loaded the bases with none out in the top of the seventh on three consecutive singles but scored only once on F.A. Vildosola's sacrifice fly. Addison got out of the jam by striking out the last two batters. The Trojans put their first two batters on base in the eighth, but Addison retired the next two batters and Wilson got the final out. Reed padded Lander's lead in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out, two-run single, making it 8-2. Reed and Walton paced the Bearcats, each going 2-for-4 while combining for five RBI. Lewis paced Anderson with two hits in four at-bats. Anderson starting pitcher Aaron Griffith allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out three in four innings.
