Belmont Abbey Surprises Trojans Twice

BELMONT, N.C. -- Matt Waldron was 6-for-8 in two games with two homers and two doubles to lead last-place Belmont Abbey to a sweep of Anderson College in a CVAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon. In the first game, Belmont Abbey rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to take a 6-5 victory. Waldron provided the winning hit with a two-out, two-run double. Brandon Brooks also had an RBI single in the inning. Anderson had seized a 5-2 lead in the sixth by pushing five runs across. Caleb Owen had a two-run triple, Jared Taylor had an RBI single, and Donavon Schmidt had a two-run single in the inning. In the second game, Belmont Abbey jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third on consecutive solo home runs by Waldron, Brett Davis, and Ian Gibson and held on for a 5-3 victory. Anderson cut the Abbey lead to 3-2 in the fourth on consecutive singles by Schmidt and Joe Whitham, a sacrifice, a throwing error, and an RBI single by Kyle Lewis. Waldron had an RBI single in the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Udwari to give the Crusaders a 5-2 lead. Lewis also had a solo home run in the sixth to slice the Crusader lead to 5-3, but the Trojans could get no closer. Belmont Abbey's Joey Raczkowski went the distance in the second game for the victory. He scattered 10 hits, struck out seven, and walked none in seven innings. The sweep improves Belmont Abbey to 10-41 overall and 5-18 in the CVAC, while Anderson falls to 18-31, 7-15. The three-game series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.
