AC Beats Southern Wesleyan For First Victory

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Joe Whitham drove in four runs and Caleb Owen collected three RBI to lead Anderson College to an 11-6 victory over Southern Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Anderson, 1-4 overall, jumped out to a 6-0 lead through two innings then beat back a Southern Wesleyan rally with four runs in the sixth. Anderson opened the game with three straight hits -- triples by Jared Taylor and Caleb Owen, a double by Jason Ratliff, and single by Whitham. A two-out single by Tony Graham gave the Trojans a 4-0 lead after one inning. AC added two more runs in the second on singles by Taylor and Owen and a two-out, two-run double by Whitham. Southern Wesleyan, 4-1 overall, got a pair of RBI doubles by Wes Thompson and Brett Jones during a three-run third. The Warriors got another run back in the fourth on a one-out walk by Nathan Swords and two-out double by Kyle Kmiecik. In the sixth, a double by Swords and an error cut the AC lead to 6-5, but the Warriors would get no closer. In the bottom of the sixth, Owen provided a two-run triple to highlight a four-run inning for the Trojans. Justin Sterling capped the scoring for Anderson in the seventh with a solo home run to left. Freshman Jacob Reid struck out three, walked three, and allowed seven hits in five innings to pick up his first victory. AC relievers Brian Devereaux, Joe Hall, and Adam Dymond combined to allow just three hits in the final four innings. Anderson collected 14 hits, six for extra bases, and stranded just four runners. Southern Wesleyan had 10 hits and left 11 stranded. In addition to Whitham's four-RBI day, the Trojans received big games from Taylor, who was 4-for-5 and scored three times, and Owen, who was 3-for-5 and scored three times.
