Mount Olive Erupts To Gain Split

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Steve Parrish hit his 19th home run of the season and Weston Curles pitched a three-hitter to lead No. 21 Mount Olive to an 8-1 victory over Anderson College in the second game and a split of a CVAC doubleheader Friday afternoon at Scarborough Field. In the first game, Nat McCarty allowed four hits in 8 1/3 innings and Donovan Schmidt hit a two-run homer to highlight a six-run seventh inning and lead Anderson to a 7-3 victory. Mount Olive, 31-12 overall and 16-7 in the CVAC, took a 3-0 lead in the third inning of the first game on a two-run homer by Craigh Hurba and a solo shot by Parrish. An RBI single by F.A. Vildosola got Anderson, 16-28 and 7-12, on the board in the fourth. In the seventh, Anderson tied the game on a two-run single by Jason Ratliff. Jason Jones followed Ratliff with a two-run double down the left field line to give Anderson a 5-3 lead. Schmidt followed Jones with a two-run homer. McCarty held Mount Olive to just two hits until the ninth. Adam Dymond recorded the final two outs for the save. Mount Olive starter Ricky Duke, who entered the game tied for first in the nation in victories, suffered his first loss of the season to fall to 9-1. In the second game, Anderson grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Schmidt. RBI singles by Parrish and Matt Rickard gave Mount Olive a 2-1 lead in the third. In the fourth, Allen Thomas had a run-scoring single to make it 4-1 in favor of Mount Olive. Mount Olive broke the game open with a five-run sixth. Parrish capped the inning with his second home run of the day, a three-run shot to right. Parrish has six homers in his last four games. The two teams will conclude the three-game series Saturday at noon.
