AC, Erskine Add Cup To Rivalry

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson College athletic director Bobby Beville and Erskine College Chip Sherer announced the creation of the Anderson-Erskine Cup Sponsored By ARAMARK Saturday afternoon. By creating the Cup competition, the two schools, both members of the NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference, hope to promote and enhance the rivalry between their athletic teams. Points will be awarded in every head-to-head competition between the two schools and in two academic categories -- graduation rate and percentage of student-athletes named CVAC All-Academic. The Cup will be awarded annually at the winning school's spring athletic banquet. "The idea came from the Carlyle Cup, an annual competition between North Carolina and Duke that I was familiar with during my days as a graduate student in Chapel Hill," Sherer said. "Anderson and Erskine have every thing you need to make a great rivalry. We're in the same conference, we recruit some of the same areas in South Carolina, and we're just 22 miles apart." The school presidents -- Dr. Evans Whitaker of Anderson and Dr. John Carson of Erskine -- and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committees at both schools unanimously approved the creation of the Cup. The next competition in the battle for the first Cup is Monday, Dec. 1 when Anderson visits Erskine for a basketball doubleheader. "I think this is an exciting addition to the rivalry between Anderson and Erskine," Beville said. "Having athletics and academics in the same competition is a great idea. No matter where either school is in the CVAC standings, every competition between Anderson and Erskine now will mean a little bit more." "The two academic components were high on the list for Bobby and myself," Sherer said. "We both thought it was important to include academics because of the missions of our institutions." Anderson and Erskine became conference foes in 1998 when AC joined the CVAC. "We appreciate ARAMARK for sponsoring the Cup and for all they do to assist both institutions," Sherer said. The competition will start as the Anderson-Erskine Cup Sponsored By ARAMARK, but the two schools are still searching for a name for the Cup, a name or a symbol that represents both institutions. "We're looking for something similar to the Old Oaken Bucket (Indiana-Purdue), Paul Bunyan's Axe (Minnesota-Wisconsin) or the Apple Cup (Washington-Washington State)," Sherer said. "Eventually, the Cup could be named for somebody." Points for the Anderson-Erskine Cup Sponsored By ARAMARK will be awarded in the following manner. Two sports -- women's cross country and women's basketball -- are being scored differently because of scholarship differences between the two schools. There is a total of 32 points available which means it will take 16.5 points to capture the Cup. If head-to-head meetings are split, each school will receive 1.5 points: -- Fall: men's cross country (CVAC finish) 3 points; women's cross country (CVAC finish) 1 point; men's soccer head-to-head 3 points; women's soccer head-to-head 3 points. -- Winter: men's basketball head-to-head 3 points; women's basketball head-to-head 1 point. -- Spring: baseball head-to-head 3 points; softball head-to-head 3 points; men's tennis head-to-head 3 points; women's tennis head-to-head 3 points. -- Academic Component: graduation rate 3 points; percentage of student-athletes named CVAC All-Academic 3 points. There will be four tiebreakers: school winning most head-to-head meetings, combined finish in the CVAC's Joby Hawn and Messick Award competitions, school winning the most head-to-head post-season games, and coin flip by the presidents.
