ANDERSON, S.C. -- Virginia Cates scored two goals to lead Anderson University to a 3-1 victory over Brevard in a non-conference match Wednesday night at Smethers Field. "It was a good first effort," said Anderson head coach Jason Dowiak. "We showed good composure in the first half. We fought hard defensively in the second half. I thought Lisa Taylor, Ashley Hollander, Lexi Horn, and Bethany Craig all played well in the back." Anderson, 1-0 overall, scored first on a penalty kick at 8:58 by Cates after Larissa Fedorowich was taken down in the box. Brevard, 1-1, tied the match eight minutes later on a 20-yard shot by Baily Varley. Cates provided what proved to be the game winner at 24:44 off an assist from Fedorowich. Anderson's final goal came at 38:12 on an 18-yard shot from the right wing by Catherine Thomas. Anderson outshot Brevard, 14-12.
