HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Paced by sophomore Victoria Hall and junior Anna Freeman's 4-over-par 76s the Anderson women's golf team is tied for seventh place following opening-round action at the Battle at Hilton Head, Monday at the 5,934 yard, par-72 Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort layout.
"We were excited to get started with our first tournament of the semester," said Anderson head coach Danny Neal. "The ladies showed a lot of grit and played a solid round, with all five scoring in the 70s. We are tied for seventh in a really strong field. Hopefully, we can put together a good round tomorrow and possibly move up in the final standings."
Lee leads the 17-team field by two shots over Limestone, with Catawba and Missouri-St. Louis deadlocked in third place. Carson-Newman and UNC Pembroke share the fifth spot, with Anderson and Lenoir-Rhyne tied for seventh place. Mount Olive and Simon Fraser share ninth place, with Columbus State alone in the 11th slot.
Queens, Davenport, Belmont Abbey, Southern Wesleyan, Lincoln Memorial and Barton round out the field.
UMSL's Emma Thorngren (70) leads the 36-hole event by one shot over UNC Pembroke's Parker Melting (71), while Catawba's Kaley Barts and Sarah Coltrane, along with Limestone's Pilar Martinez, are one shot further back after each carded an even-par 72 on the day. Five additional golfers are just three shots off the pace.
Hall and Freeman are among six players deadlocked in a tie for 23rd, with senior Kate Hill sharing 29th place after carding a 5-over-par 77. Sophomore Kerington Lamb and freshman Emma Charles each posted a 6-over 78, with the duo sitting in a nine-way tie for 41st place.
Tuesday's second round is slated to get underway at 9 a.m.
