DADE CITY, Fla. – Paced by junior Anna Freeman's season-best, 2-over-par 74, the Anderson University women's golf team is in sixth place following opening-round action at the Saint Leo Invitational, Monday at the par-72, 6,105 yard Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club South Course.
"It's a tough course," said Anderson assistant coach Denton Moore. "And we're playing against some really good teams. But we're in a decent spot. Anna [Freeman] played really well and she's in great position. Emma [Charles] has been steady all season."
No. 15 Florida Southern leads the host Lions by just one stroke, while 16th-ranked Tampa is four strokes further back in third place. West Florida is fourth, with No. 25 Central Missouri in the fifth slot.
Anderson is just four shots behind the Jennies, with Rollins (B) in seventh place. Palm Beach Atlantic and Eckerd are tied for eighth place heading into Tuesday's final round.
Central Missouri's Olivia Sobaski, West Florida's Kelie Kan and Florida Southern's Nathalie Svennsson are all tied atop the individual leaderboard after firing even-par 72s on the day.
Freeman is in a five-way tie for seventh place and just two strokes out of the lead in the logjam at the top of the leaderboard, which features a dozen players within three strokes of the top.
Charles carded a 4-over 76 and is tied for 15th, with sophomore Victoria Hall posting a 79 and sitting in a tie for 30th place. Sophomore Kerington Lamb is tied for 34th place after posting an 80, while senior Kate Hill (82) shares 39th place.
Tuesday's second round is slated to get underway with split tees at 8:30 a.m.
