Trojans Advance to Championship

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Paced by first-team all-conference selection Jessica Kleinberg's two first-half goals, the third-seeded Anderson women's soccer team earned its first-ever trip to the Conference Carolinas tournament championship with a 2-1 win past No. 7 seed Limestone Thursday night at the AU Soccer Field. The Trojans (12-8), who have posted a school-record nine-match win streak, were not to be denied on the cold clear night and move on to face top-seeded Belmont Abbey, which shut out fifth-seeded Lees-McRae, 3-0, in the other semifinal contest this afternoon in Belmont, N.C. After knocking off second-seeded Pfeiffer last Monday night, the Lady Saints ended their season at 8-11 on the year. "Our freshmen have played well all year," Anderson head coach Jason Dowiak said. "It was just a matter of time before everything came together. Jessica had another great game and showed that no matter what the circumstances or situation she is going to create chances and come up big in the biggest moments." The last meeting between these two teams was also decided by one goal, on a Kleinberg score in the 54th minute off an assist from fellow freshman Carrie Settle, and tonight's affair was again decided by a single score. The match was evenly played throughout, but Kleinberg's two-goal outburst in a three-minute span proved to be the difference. Freshman Joelle Purinton, who came off the bench nine minutes earlier, weaved her way through the Limestone defense and found Kleinberg. The forward then laced a shot from the right corner of the box that found the back of the net to break the scoreless tie in the 35th minute of action. Less than three minutes later, the Trojans capitalized on a Limestone foul, as senior Larissa Fedorowich sailed her free kick from the left side into the box and Kleinberg notched her fifth game-winning goal of the season. But the win would not come easy for AU, as Limestone sophomore Vanessa Jarrett trimmed the Trojans' lead to one when she worked her way through traffic on the right side and put her shot in the net at the 47:15 mark. The score swung momentum back to Limestone for awhile, but the Saints were unable to find the equalizer. The Anderson defense has surrendered just three goals in its last seven matches and has posted three shutouts in the last four contests. "Our back three [Danielson, Conover and Caldwell] played well," Dowiak added. "Tori [Danielson] has been playing lights out and Kelli [Whitfield] was awesome in the net." The Saints held a 10-7 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks, but Anderson notched four shots on goal, while Limestone collected three. Senior Kelli Whitfield played the entire match in goal for the Trojans as did senior Brittany Clark for the Saints, with each recording two saves on the night. Anderson upset Belmont Abbey, 3-2, earlier this season at the AU Soccer Field behind a pair of goals from Kleinberg. Kick-off for the tourney championship is slated for 1 p.m. at Alumni Field.
