ANDERSON, S.C. -- In the conference opener for both teams, the visiting Queens University Royals handed the Anderson women's soccer team a 5-1 setback Saturday evening at the AU Soccer Field. The Trojans, who had been idle for a week after having their match at North Georgia canceled due to inclement weather, came out early and pushed the offensive attack, but were unable to capitalize. "I am really disappointed tonight," said Anderson head coach Jason Dowiak. "I feel like we didn't play well and we are losing some games that shouldn't." Queens (2-4-0, 1-0 Conference Carolinas) got on the scoreboard first when freshman Kristen Wright intercepted a short kick and maneuvered her way toward the AU goal and got a left-footed attempt between the posts. Anderson (0-4, 0-1 Conference Carolinas) appeared to notch the game-tying goal off the foot of Adrienne Lough as the net swayed with a swarm of players from both teams battling in front, but the ball bounced off the crossbar and AU came away empty-handed. The two teams went to intermission with the Royals holding the slim 1-0 advantage, but Wright scored two more goals in the second frame before Anderson freshman Joelle Purinton pulled the Trojans back to within 3-1 on her second goal of the season. But Wright countered with her fourth score of the night and the visitors' Megan Sload scored with less than two minutes remaining to set the final margin. Anderson has a week to rest before returning to the AU Soccer Field to play host to Barton College on Saturday, Sept. 19, in the first match of a women's-men's doubleheader, with kick-off slated for 5 p.m.
