ANDERSON, S.C. -- Playing its second match in as many days, the Anderson womens soccer team wrapped up its brief two-match homestand by dropping a 3-0 decision to Lander Saturday night at the AU Soccer Field. The story of the night for Anderson was the stellar net-minding of senior keeper Kelli Whitfield, who posted 11 saves in the contest, with of them diving stops to either side of the net. Lander (1-0-0) threaten first when sophomore Christina Barbour broke free and fired a shot toward the AU goal, but Whitfield came up with a diving stop to her right to thwart the attempt. The Bearkats appeared to be on the verge of getting on the scoreboard at the 16:29 mark of the opening frame when the Trojans were whistled for a handball, giving the visitors a penalty kick. Lander junior Christin Moss launched the shot low and to the right, but Whitfield again made the diving save. The Trojans, who fell to 0-3 on the season, could not keep LU off the scoreboard, however, as freshman Jamie Shaw nudged a header that just slipped past the AU keeper and settled in the net in the 24th minute of action. "Lander is a great team and they played well tonight," said Anderson head coach Jason Dowiak. "It is really tough to play back-to-back and we got tired, especially late in the match. Coming in we wanted to slow the game down, but we were unable to do that and it led to their late goals. I thought Kelli played an outstanding game." Anderson will get back on the pitch Wednesday, Sept. 9, when the Trojans visit North Georgia College for the Lady Saints' only home non-conference game of the season. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the NGCSU Soccer Complex.
