ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson womens soccer team captured their first win of the season on Saturday, by defeating conference opponent Barton College 3-2 in an overtime thriller at the Anderson Civic Center. Both teams missed out on some early opportunities, and the game was scoreless at the half. Barton scored on two chances midway through the second period, leaving Anderson (1-4, 1-1 Conference Carolinas) down two goals with just 25 minutes to play. However, the Trojans did not quit, "I am happy with our first win tonight," said Anderson head coach Jason Dowiak. "We showed a lot of character fighting back from a 2-0 deficit." Freshman Joelle Purinton scored off a loose ball at 80:03 to light a fire in the Trojans. They would stay on the attack and Larissa Federowich connected on a 20-yard bomb with just over five minutes remaining in the game. Both teams would have a few more chances, but regulation ended with the scored knotted at 2-2. Just three minutes into the overtime period freshman Carrie Settle headed in a beautiful corner kick from Adrienne Lough that ended the game and sent the Anderson faithful into a frenzy. "Adrienne Lough had a great game, and did a good job of controlling the middle," said Dowiak. "I'm happy we were able to finish some goals tonight." Anderson will get back on the pitch Wednesday, Sept. 23, when the Trojans open a two-game road trip at longtime rival Erskine. Kick-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Huggins Field.
