Women's Soccer Outlasts Belmont Abbey

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Paced by two second-half goals, the Anderson women's soccer team handed Belmont Abbey their first Conference Carolina loss of the season with a 3-2 victory Wednesday at the AU soccer field. "This is without question the biggest win we've had I've had in my career here," Anderson head coach Jason Dowiak said. "We beat the top team in the league and this is the turning point. We finally put together a complete 90 minutes tonight." Anderson (2-6-0, 2-3-0) will play games on the road against Converse and North Georgia before returning home on October 7 to host Newberry. Belmont Abbey broke a 1-1 halftime tie with a penalty kick by Amanda Maddock five minutes into the second half, but the Trojans responded with a goal by freshman Jessica Kleinberg (Hamilton, Ohio). Catherine Thomas played a high ball into the box, and Kleinberg corralled the ball and hammered it into back of the net to tie the score at 2-2. Kleinberg gave the Trojans the lead for good with 15:27 remaining on her second goal of the game. Katelyn Conover played a long ball, and Kleinberg flipped the ball past the charging Belmont Abbey keeper before finding the net for the game-winning goal. "I haven't scored since the first game and I've been struggling, and this is the best feeling," Kleinberg said. "Seeing the ball go into the back of the net was amazing and this will make me better for the next game." "It was a big game for Jessica and it was great to have her step up and find the net," Dowiak said. "She got some good balls in and her second goal was just a great finish. We knew what she could do coming in, and this was what we've been waiting to see." After several early opportunities, Belmont Abbey converted a shot attempt with 16:17 remaining in the first half. Kristin Foster's corner kick was headed by Nicole Voets, and Trojans' keeper Kelli Whitfield nearly made the stop but the ball trickled through to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. Anderson answered late in the first half when Jessica Kleinberg (Hamilton, Ohio) pressured the Crusaders' defender on a ball in the box, forcing an own goal that tied the score at 1-1. The Crusaders controlled possession in Anderson territory for much of the game, but the Trojans' defense was up to the challenge. The Trojans forced nine Belmont attempts to be off the mark, and Whitfield finished the game with seven saves on 19 Belmont Abbey shots.
