Third-Seeded Anderson Tops Erskine

Third-Seeded Anderson Tops Erskine

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Freshman Adrienne Lough's goal in the 105th minute of play lifted third-seeded Anderson past sixth-seeded Erskine, 1-0, in a thrilling double-overtime match in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 Conference Carolinas women's soccer tournament Monday night at the AU Soccer Field. Anderson improved to 11-8 on the season, while Erskine wrapped up the 2009 campaign with a 7-10-1 mark. The Trojans advance to meet No. 7 seed Limestone, a 1-0 upset-winner past No. 2 seed Pfeiffer this afternoon in a match moved from Misenheimer, N.C. to Queens' pitch in Charlotte. The Trojans avenged an earlier regular-season, 2-1, setback at the hands of the Flying Fleet en route to stretching their school-record win streak to eight and claiming their first-ever conference tournament victory. "Jessica Kleinberg provided a threat up top that opened it up for other players while Larissa Fedorowich set the tone in the middle," said Anderson head coach Jason Dowiak. "And Adrienne Lough was very composed - her stepping up and scoring the goal said a lot about her play" In a contest that was evenly-played throughout, the Trojans threatened early when Lough took a feed from the right side but her shot in the fourth minute sailed high. However, Erskine, which was coming off a regular-season finale that saw the Flying Fleet upset top-seeded Belmont Abbey, controlled the pace in the early going with sophomore Lindsay Patterson pushing the EC offensive attack. The match settled into a give-and-take with AU holding a slim 5-4 edge in shots during the first half, but neither team was able to find the back of the net and went to the half scoreless. Both squads' defenses held strong, with Lough's first game-winner of the season being the difference. With the Trojans pushing the attack, her long attempt from the middle of the pitch bounced past EC keeper Si'Ara Washington and settled in the net as the AU bench erupted. Anderson held an 18-7 advantage in shots on the night and an 8-6 edge in shots on goal, while notching seven corner kicks to the Fleet's four corners. AU freshman Carrie Settle recorded a match-high six shots and Erskine's Molly Harpe garnered a team-high four shots, including three on goal. Senior Kelli Whitfield went the distance between the pipes for AU, as the Anderson posted its third consecutive shutouts. "Kelli Whitfield had another great game in goal," added Dowiak. "And Danielson, Caldwell and Conover continued to play well in the back." The Trojans, who less than a week ago topped Limestone 1-0 in Gaffney, will host the Saints in a 7 p.m. match on Thursday at the AU Soccer Field. Game Stats Season Stats
