GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Lander exploded for five runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-6 non-conference victory over Anderson University Monday night at Legion Field. Lander improves to 15-15 overall, while Anderson drops to 12-26. Casey Downam (1-2) earned the win for the Bearcats as he struck out five, walked three and allowed one earned run on four hits in five complete innings. Anderson's Brady Peele (1-4) suffered the loss, striking out three, walking one and allowing six runs (one earned) on seven hits in five complete innings. Anderson took a quick 1-0 lead when Derek Hipp doubled, advanced to third on a pop fly and scored on a groundout. Lander tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning when Malcolm McLeod singled, advanced to third on Robert Skinner's single to left field, and scored on Gabe McCann's foul fly down the third base line. Downam got himself out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the fifth after he struck out the final two batters of the inning. Lander took a 6-1 lead in the fifth inning as Alex Baur scored on Skinner's RBI double and McCann and Brooks Arnette added RBI singles. TJ Guinan and Arnett later scored on Anderson errors. Anderson cut the margin to 6-3 in the sixth, when Clint Neville scored on Don Ballard's RBI single and Walt Quattlebaum crossed the plate on an RBI single by Josh Grubbs. The Bearcats stretched their lead to 7-3 in the sixth inning when McLeod singled to center, stole second, and scored on another RBI double by Skinner. The Trojans sliced the Lander lead to 7-5 in the seventh when Patrick West and Blair Carson, who both reached on singles and advanced on a groundout, scored on a throwing error by Baur. Anderson made it a one-run game at 7-6 in the eighth when Hipp scored on an RBI double by Carson. For Lander, Skinner went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one run scored and two RBI; AJ Nunziato went 1-for-4 with one double; and McLeod was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. For Anderson, Hipp went 1-for-3 with one double and two runs scored; Carson went 2-for-5 with one double and one run scored; and Neville went 1-for-4 with one double and one run scored.
