ANDERSON, S.C. -- Brady Peele threw six innings and allowed three earned runs to earn the win as Anderson University beat Wingate 5-4 in a non-conference game Thursday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Peele recorded eight strikeouts while only giving up eight hits and one walk. Anderson took an early lead in the first inning on a two-run homer by Matt Hill. Wingate responded in the top of the second on a solo blast by Aaron Knowles and Nick Siega-Riz drove in Cale Rogers on a two-out double to left to tie the game at 2. In the second, Ryan Saxon singled, reached third on a botched pick-off attempt and scored on a ground out by Ed Johnson to give Anderson a 3-2 lead. In the fourth, Blair Carson led off with a double down the left field line and scored on a double by Saxon to put Anderson ahead 4-2. Anderson scratched across a run in the fifth when Josh Grubbs led off with a triple and scored on an RBI single by Hipp to take a 5-2 lead. The Bulldogs rallied in the seventh against Peele with back-to-back singles by Dustin Hurdle and Heath Weatherford. Justin Rogers, who came in to relieve Peele, walked the first batter he faced to load the bases with no outs. After Rogers walked Spencer Robinson, he got Knowles to ground into a double play that scored Hurdle. Blair Troutman followed by reaching on an error that scored Weatherford, but Rogers retired the next batter to keep Anderson in front, 5-4. Jordan Oates recorded his first save of the season by throwing two innings and striking out the side in the ninth. Anderson was led offensively by Hill, who was 2-for-4 with a two run home run, and by Saxon, who was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Hipp contributed two hits in four at bats and stole three bases. Rogers led the Bulldog offense by going 2-for-4. Anderson, 8-22 overall, has won three of its last four. The loss drops Wingate to 12-18.
