ANDERSON, S.C. -- Carson-Newman spotted Anderson University a 15-2 lead then came roaring back for a 24-18 victory in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at a windswept Anderson Memorial Stadium. The Eagles, 7-3 overall, scored in seven of the nine innings. The Eagles had 16 hits, 11 for extra bases. Five of Carson-Newman's extra base hits were triples. Anderson native Nick Achberger led the Carson-Newman offense with four hits in six trips and six RBI. Achberger had a two-run homer in the first, a run-scoring double in the third, a two-run double in the fourth, and an RBI single in the eighth. Cory McGinnis, who entered the game in fifth drove in five runs for the Eagles with an inside the park grand slam and a sacrifice fly. Anderson, 2-8, jumped on Carson-Newman early by scoring two runs in the first and 12 runs in the second. The Anderson second was highlighted by two grand slams -- the first by Walt Quattlebaum and the second by Clint Neville. Quattlebaum's grand slam was his second in two days. Quattlebaum and Neville both finished the game with five RBI apiece. Neville was 4-for-5 with a home run and a double, and Quattlebaum was 3-for-6 with a home run and a double. Matt Hill also was 4-for-5 for Anderson. After scoring 12 runs in the second, Anderson scored just three in the final seven innings. The Eagles crawled their way back into the game with four in fourth, four in fifth, a single run in the sixth, and five runs in the sixth to tie the game at 16. McGinnis' grand slam tied the game at 16. The Eagles took the lead for the first time in the seventh then put the game away with seven runs in the eighth. The big hit in the Carson-Newman eighth was a two-run triple by Langdon Potts. Carson-Newman left just four men on base. Anderson finished the game with 19 hits, seven for extra bases.
