ANDERSON, S.C. -- Ryan Toney and Matt Castro combined for a three-hit shutout and Luke Loveless drove in two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning with a double to lead Brevard for 4-0 victory over Anderson University Thursday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. The victory improves Brevard to 8-16. The loss, Anderson's first shutout of the season, drops the Trojans to 10-24. Toney allowed three hits and struck out five in 7 2/3 innings. Thirteen of the outs he recorded were ground outs. Rogers entered with runners on first and third with two outs in the eighth, struck out Ryan Saxon to end the threat, and pitched a perfect ninth to earn the save. The Tornados scored their first run in the top of the fifth on a single by Jesse Swain, a sacrifice, and a throwing error. Swain went from first to third on the sacrifice and scored on a wild throw by Anderson first baseman Andrew Davis. Anderson starter and loser Brady Peele allowed just three hits and struck out five in eight innings. Anderson left nine runners on base. The Trojans left two runners on base in the second, third, sixth, and eighth. All three of Anderson's hits were singles. Designated hitter Matt Hill had two of Anderson's three hits. The Tornados added three runs in the top of ninth. Matt Rose started the inning with a double to end Peele's day. After an infield single by Mitch Hefner and a ground out put runners at second and third, Rose scored when Matt Jones reached on a throwing error by third baseman Ryan Saxon. After another ground out, Lovelace laced a two-run double to right field to score Hefner and Jones. Brevard finished the game with five hits by five different players. Lovelace and Rose both had doubles. Anderson returns to Conference Carolinas play Friday with a doubleheader at Coker.
