Whitfield, Delancey Lead Anderson To 1-0 Victory

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Freshman goalkeeper Kelli Whitfield made 10 saves and Megan Delancey provided the lone goal of the match to lead Anderson University to a 1-0 victory over Lees-McRae in a CVAC match Tuesday night at Smethers Field. "It wasn't beautiful but it was a gutty effort," said Anderson head coach Abby Crumpton. "We will take the result. We needed that win for the conference and our confidence. We can possess better and and play smarter, but tonight we just played hard and got through it." Delancey, a senior from Orlando, Fla., scored her first goal of the season at 23:05. Off a restart, Crystal Gaffney pushed the ball to Delancey, and Delancey hit a low shot from 20 yards that eluded Lees-McRae goalkeeper Anita Hekman. Delancey is the seventh different Lady Trojan to score a goal this season. Anderson improves to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the CVAC, while Lees-McRae falls to 4-5, 2-2. Through nine matches, the Lady Trojans already have surpassed last year's victory total. Anderson missed a golden opportunity to take a 2-0 lead just two minutes after Delancey's goal when Hekman fouled Allison Patton deep in the box. But Hekman stopped Gaffney's penalty kick to keep the Anderson lead at 1-0. The Bobcats, who had 18 shots, kept constant pressure on the Anderson defense throughout the match. But the Lady Trojans used pesky defense and several long clearing passes to frustrate the Lees-McRae attack. Whitfield, a native of Anderson, made two saves in the first half and eight in the second half. The play of the match came with just seconds remaining. With the Bobcats rushing the net and Whitfield on the opposite side, Anderson defender Rachel Claypool kicked away Lees-McRae's final shot to perserve the shutout. The shutout was Whitfield's second of the season and her first since Sept. 6. Anderson had 12 shots by five different players. Hekman finished the match with six saves. 2006 Anderson Women's Soccer Statistics
