Lady Trojans Fall In Double OT

LAURINBURG, N.C. -- Freshman Carrie Jones scored her first collegiate goal in the 101st minute to lift the St. Andrews women's soccer team to a 2-1 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference victory over visiting Anderson University Saturday. The Knights improve to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the CVAC. The Lady Trojans fall 2-4, 0-2. SAPC held a 7-2 shot advantage in the first half and almost took the lead on a freshman Hannah Sheffield blast. However, AU freshman goalkeeper Kelli Whitfield deflected the hard shot enough as it bounced off the cross bar late in the half. The Lady Trojans turn the match around in the second half with an 11-5 advantage on shots. In the 84th minute, junior Crystal Olu-Taylor provided the spark by finishing off a breakaway pass from sophomore Abby Leake to put St. Andrews on the board. St. Andrews looked poised to take the 1-0 game, but a yellow card against the Knights with 1:12 left set up the game-tying opportunity. On the restart, senior Megan Delancey served a volley into the box that was headed by junior Allison Eudy; which was then one-timed by Kristy Fikes to knot the score at 1-1 with only 67 seconds left in regulation. The Lady Knights ripped four shots in the first 10-minute, sudden death period, but Whitfield made the save on both shots on goal. Finally, Brittany Forrest placed a long crossing pass that set up the game-winning breakaway by Jones in the first minute of the second OT. Sophomore goalkeeper Garrison Burton improved to 3-4 on the season with six saves in 101 minutes of action. Whitfield made five stops for the Lady Trojans. 2006 Anderson Women's Soccer Statistics
