Anderson Women Survive Furious Rally By SAPC

ANDERSON, S.C. - Anderson University placed five players in double figures and survived a furious rally by St. Andrews Presbyterian in the final five minutes to beat the Lady Knights 87-79 in a CVAC women's game Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center. "We were encouraged by the fact we had balanced scoring with five players in double figures and Deidra Langston was not one of the five," said Anderson head coach Jeff Dow. "That just speaks to our depth. We also had a nice balance of scoring inside and outside." Anderson was led by Mikala Fogle-Wilson with 21 points. She was followed by Haley Riffle with 12, Latrice Thomas with 11, and Keana Boyd and Genia Holbrook with 10 apiece. Riffle's 12 points was a career high. Holbrook also a team-high seven rebounds and six steals. "Haley gave us a great lift off the bench, especially in the first half," Dow said. "Our two freshmen guards -- Shanice Wilson and Shadae Thompson also were huge combining for 12 points in 15 minutes." Karen Foggie of St. Andrews led all scorers with 22 points. Ashley Mitchell added 17 points for the Lady Knights. Anderson led by 19 points - 68-49 - with 4:41 remaining, but St. Andrews went on a 21-5 run to cut the AU lead to 80-77 with 59 seconds remaining. Foggie led the St. Andrews rally with 10 points. But Anderson, 10-1 overall and 4-0 in the CVAC, made seven free throws in the final 45 seconds - four by Boyd - to hang on for its 10th straight victory. The loss drops St. Andrews to 6-2, 3-1. Anderson took the lead at the 18:11 mark of the first half and never trailed again. The Lady Trojans biggest lead of the first half was 48-31 with 30 seconds remaining. The Lady Trojans led 48-33 at the half. Anderson's lead reached 19 points three times in the second half, but St. Andrews refused to fold. Both teams had problems handling the ball. St. Andrews committed 30 turnovers and Anderson suffered 26. Anderson scored 42 points off of St. Andrews' turnovers. "We had some defensive breakdowns, but we did force 30 turnovers and those turnovers helped trigger our fast break to build a 19-point lead," Dow said. St. Andrews shot 54 percent from the field, 58 percent in the first half. Anderson shot 53 percent in the first half and 49 percent for the game. The Lady Trojans had yet another big game at the free throw line. Anderson was 34-for-40 from the charity stripe. Anderson has won 41 of its last 44 CVAC games.
