Lady Trojans Drop First Exhibition Game

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest placed four players in double figures on its way to a 64-54 exhibition victory over Anderson University Friday night at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum. Wake was led by Alex Tochangoue with 15 points, Yolanda Lavender with 13 points, Christen Brown with 12 points, and Melissa Washington with 10. Anderson was led by senior All-American candidate Deidra Langston and Mikala Fogle-Wilson, who finished the game with 19 points apiece. "We had a great effort defensively, which gave us a chance to win the game," said Anderson head coach Jeff Dow. "But our offense was spotty, and we were careless with the ball at times. We had long stretches in both halves with wasted possessions. We knew their size was going to be a problem. They were big, physical, and athletic. The turnovers and offensive rebounds killed us." Wake used its size to outrebound Anderson, 45-30. Twenty-three of Wake's rebounds were off the offensive glass. Wake scored 27 points off 28 Anderson turnovers. Anderson's defense forced 24 Wake turnovers. The game was the first of three exhibitions in five days for the Lady Trojans. Anderson will face Duke at 2 p.m. Sunday, and Clemson at 7 p.m. Tuesday. "We needed to be more efficient and play harder offensively," Dow said. "I am proud that we never quit and we hung in there. We said when we started this trip that we wanted to play hard and play together. There's no question we played together, but we need to play harder on the offensive end." Langston was 15-for-17 from the line, while Fogle-Wilson made 4-of-7 from behind the arc. For the game, Wake shot 38 percent from the field to Anderson's 32 percent. Wake opened the second half with a 9-2 run to increase its lead to 41-29 with 16:25 remaining. On 8-0 run gave Wake its largest lead of 16 points - 49-33 - with just under 11 minutes remaining. The Deacons scored the final four points of the first half to take a 32-27 lead at the half. Anderson shot just 39 percent from the field in the first half but made 3 of 7 from behind the arc and 6 of 8 at the free throw line. Trailing 28-20 with 5:06 left in the first half, the Lady Trojans scored seven straight points to pull to within one point. After a 3-point goal by Fogle-Wilson cut the Wake lead to 28-27, Anderson got a stop. But Wake forced a turnover and Lavender converted a jumper to give the Deacons a 30-27 lead. Wake Forest jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the first five and a half minutes, but a three-point basket and layup by Fogle-Wilson cut the Deacon lead to 18-15 at the 11:27 mark.
