Lady Trojans Begin Season At Georgia College

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson University women's head basketball coach Jeff Dow is hoping familiarity will lead to even more success in his second season. Anderson started the 2006-07 season with three exhibition games against ACC competition -- Wake Forest, Duke, and Clemson. The season begins for real Wednesday at Georgia College and State University. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. In his first season, Dow led the Lady Trojans to a record of 27-5, a second straight CVAC regular-season title, a third straight CVAC Tournament title, and a third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. "The thing that really stands out is the familiarity - the coaches with the players and the players with coaches with things like terminology and set plays," Dow said. "The transition will be easier this year. The players responded well last year. They adapted to a completely different system than what they were accustomed to. They certainly were a coachable group. That's part of the reason we're so optimistic about this season. "We would like to use the momentum we gained last season as a springboard. As coaches, we know the skills our players have and where we can put them in positions to succeed. I think we can hit the ground running a little faster." At 83.5 points per game, the Lady Trojans led the nation in scoring last season for the second time in the past three years. But Dow wants his team to adjust its offensive approach this season. "I thought last year our offensive attack was more perimeter-oriented than I would have liked," he said. "It was great when we were hitting our threes and making shots, but in the games we struggled, it was because we didn't have much of an inside game. I really would like to see more of a balance between our inside game and our perimeter game. We're making a concerted effort to run more set plays involving our post players. We want them to be more effective." Anderson will be led by senior All-American and CVAC Player of the Year candidate Deidra Langston, who averaged 18.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per game last season. Langston needs 521 points to reach 2,000 points for her career. "Dee Dee is a tremendous player, and she has had a great career here," Dow said. "She emerged last year as a go-to scorer, and we ran a lot of set plays for her. She has shown a natural progression throughout her career. I think she is going to have a great senior year. She is very versatile, and she is a great athlete and a great rebounder." Joining Langston inside are four veteran players - seniors Kim Hausman and Kimberly Williams, junior Haley Riffle, and sophomore Genia Holbrook. "Kim has played a variety of roles for us," Dow said. "She is a good perimeter shooter and a great passer. The challenge for her is consistency. Kimberly did a good job defensively and going to the boards last year. Down the stretch, Haley had some big games and really gave us a lift. She came back in great shape and is highly motivated. Genia gave us a physical presence defensively and on the boards last season. The challenge for her is to expand her game." The two newcomers inside are freshmen Korie Sellers and Egle Bauzaite. "Korie runs the floor well and has a good jumper from the high post," Dow said. "She wants to be a good player. She needs to adjust to the physicality of the game and she needs to get stronger. Egle had a great preseason and worked hard in every area. She is going to be good at a lot of things." On the perimeter, Dow has three experienced players - juniors Latrice Thomas and Mikala Fogle-Wilson and sophomore Keana Boyd. "That trio might be as good as any in the CVAC," Dow said. "All three of them bring a lot to the table. Latrice was a tough warrior last year. She had a stress fracture in her hip the last month and a half of the season, but she continued to dive on the floor and take charges. When healthy, she was putting up numbers and emerged as a scoring threat. Mikala gave us a huge lift as a scorer off the bench. This year, more than likely, she will be starting. The challenge for her is to improve her assist to turnover ratio and developing a mind set as a point guard. Keana had a great freshman year. When she moved into the starting lineup, we played extremely good basketball for the next couple of months. She gave us a lift defensively and made some big shots. She has just scratched the surface." A trio of freshmen guards - Shadae Thompson, Shanice Wilson, and Meme Alexander - will give the Lady Trojans plenty of depth on the perimeter. "We're going to have a lot more depth and more competition at every spot this year," Dow said. "If we do have more depth, that will lend itself to playing more like I want to play, which is pick up full court and pressure more. I tell our players all the time I would like to run even more than we did last year. We were fairly successful, but I think we can take it to another level." Dow believes he has the ingredients to continue Anderson's recent run of success. "We have a lot of players who have played in tight games," he said. "There's something to be said for experience. They're accustomed to having their named called to hit a big shot or being on the floor when you have to get a stop. We were happy with last season, but we believe we're capable of going beyond what we did last year if all the pieces come together for us."
