Clemson Holds Off Anderson Rally

CLEMSON, S.C. - Clemson held off an Anderson University rally and went on to beat the Lady Trojans 85-61 in an exhibition game Tuesday night at Littlejohn Coliseum. The exhibition was Anderson's third in five days against opponents from the Atlantic Coast Conference. "I hope we learned something from this stretch of game," said Anderson head coach Jeff Dow. "I saw a lot of good things in the second half. I would like to think that we will only get better from here." Anderson's Deidra Langston led all scorers with 26 points. She was followed by Mikala Fogle-Wilson with 14 points and Keana Boyd with 12. Langston, a senior All-American candidate from Gainesville, Ga., was 11-for-18 from the field, including one basket from behind the arc. Clemson placed five players in double figures. Adrianne Bradshaw scored 17 points, Christy Brown tallied 14, Susan Yenser scored 13, and Moreemi Davis and Lele Hardy chipped in 12 apiece. Clemson used a 19-0 run in the first half to seize a 25-10 lead. After Anderson closed within 13 - 31-18 with 3:02 remaining - Clemson went on a 10-2 run to take a 41-20 lead at the break. The first 12 and a half minutes of the second half were a different story. Anderson used a trapping defense to increase the pace and fuel a 33-19 run to cut the Clemson lead to seven - 60-53 - with 7:15 remaining. "We played with a lot more passion and intensity in the second half," Dow said. "My halftime speech was not about Xs and Os. We flew around defensively and that triggered our offense." But that's where the rally ended. A 3-point goal by Boyd at the 3:30 mark cut Clemson's lead to single digits for the final time - 68-59. From that point, the Tigers went on a 17-2 run to close out the game. "Three games against ACC opponents in five days is not normal," Dow said. "We need a day off. We'll get after it on Thursday and Friday, take the weekend off, then spend Monday and Tuesday getting ready for Georgia College next Wednesday. Georgia College is a very good team. They played in the NCAA Tournament last season and won the Peach Belt Tournament." For the game, Clemson shot 51 percent from the field. Anderson shot 42 percent in the second half to finish the game at 33 percent. Anderson forced 28 turnovers and had 18 steals, six by Genia Holbrook. Clemson won the boards, 53-33, and had 18 rebounds off the offensive glass. The Tigers used their size advantage to score 56 points in the paint. Fogle-Wilson had seven of Anderson's 12 assists.
