ANDERSON, S.C. - Junior Ryan Messick found the back of the net in the 35th minute for the game's lone score as the Anderson men's soccer team topped King College, 1-0, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.

Fellow junior Lasse Sohrweide dribbled through the middle and fed Messick, who was racing in from the left side. The 5-9 midfielder blasted his shot through the pipes for the Trojans' first score of the 2010 campaign to give Anderson (1-1-1) its first win in the home opener.

"It is really nice to get that first win," said Anderson head coach Rob Miller. "Especially on our new field. We gutted out a win that we needed and we're always happy with a win."

With the setback, King (0-2-1) is still looking for its first victory of the season.

With each team looking for its first win of the early season, the physical match saw six yellow cards issued to the visiting Tornado, with nine fouls called on each team in the evenly-played contest.

King College posted two shots in the opening moments, but threatened only once more in the first half, while AU notched six shots in the first half, including Messick's game-winner.

The Trojans outshot KC 11-7 on the afternoon and held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Lukas Hesse collected the win for his second shutout of the early season, while King's Richard Masters absorbed the loss.

Anderson will get back on the pitch Friday, Sept. 10, when the Trojans visit Francis Marion. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the FMU Soccer Field in Florence.
