Trojans Earn Bid to NCAA Tournament

ANDERSON, S.C. - After winning the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament this past weekend, the Anderson men's soccer team has been selected for the Super Region III as announced by the NCAA selection Committee Monday night.

Wednesday's contest will mark the second consecutive appearance by the Trojans in the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship field of 32, and the Trojans will square off against Wingate (15-3-0) on the Bulldogs' home field.

Anderson (14-5-1) wrapped up the regular season ranked eighth in the region, but with just the top six teams in the region advancing to the NCAA Tournament, the Trojans had to wait until Monday night to learn their fate. AU stated its case by finishing with a flourish, claiming the conference title by winning three straight matches and 10 of its last 11 outings en route to setting a new school record for wins in a season for the second consecutive season.

Ironically, Wingate is the other SAC representative in the field and is the only team to have defeated the Trojans since AU began its surge in late September. The Bulldogs edged Anderson, 2-1, in overtime in the regular-season-finale for both squads.

Wingate, the No. 1 seed in the SAC tourney and ranked 16th in the nation, suffered a 2-1 setback to Mars Hill in the semifinal round of the league tourney last Friday night. The Bulldogs are led by six All-SAC selections, with senior midfielder Luke Mulholland, senior forward Jamie McKenna senior goalkeeper Joey Calandra and freshman defender Gui Andrade all earning first-team recognition.

The Trojans will counter with five all-conference honorees of their own, including SAC Player of the Year Lasse Sohrweide, who lifted AU to the tourney title on Sunday with his hat trick. The 6-foot junior is tied for 1st in the conference and ranks fifth nationally in total assists and led the SAC in total points. Sohrweide also led the league in total goals and ranks 28th in the nation in goals scored. Senior Adrien Moufflet was a first-team all-conference honoree and was named to SAC all-tournament team after tying for fourth in the SAC in assists and was fifth on the team with three goals.

Senior defender Zach Denson was a second-team all-SAC selection and was named to the SAC all-tournament team after helping lead the defense to eight shutouts on the season. He recorded six assists to rank 10th in the league and 55th in the nation and posted one game-winning score on the season. Clement Samson earned second team all-conference accolades after tying for second in the SAC in goals scored and ranking 28th nationally. The 5-10 sophomore ranked third in the conference in goals per game as was second in the SAC with four game-winning goals. Listed as a defender, Denson saw action in 19 contests, handing out six assists to rank third on the team and 55th in the nation. James Moseley rounds out the AU quintet as a 5-foot-11 junior defender who started 17 matches for head coach Rob Miller's squad. He recorded five goals while taking a total of just nine shots on the season.

The winner of Wednesday's 2 p.m. match will advance to meet top-seeded Montevallo (18-2-1), who earned a first-round bye and will host the second and third rounds at the Falcons' Varsity Field.
