Trojans Stumble at Clayton State

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 3-0 decision to homestanding Clayton State on the final day of action at the Laker Shootout Saturday night at Laker Field.

The Trojans (0-1-1) entered the two-day event ranked 14th in the nation, but suffered the setback as the Lakers (2-0) scored three goals in the second half, including a pair of scores in the first nine minutes of the frame.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half, but the host Lakers capitalized when AU defender James Moseley received a red card in the 50th minute with Clayton State's Leighton Fredericks scoring the game-winner on the resulting penalty kick.

Less than five minutes later, the junior struck again as Fredericks scored in front of the net off a cross by freshman Arturo Cruz to give Clayton State a two-goal cushion.

The Trojans held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks in the physical contest, but recorded just four shots on the night.

AU goalkeeper Lukas Hesse suffered the setback, with CLSU goalkeeper Brian Garcia earning the shutout.

Anderson will look to get in the win column when the Trojans return to the friendly confines of Trojan Stadium to play host to King College for their home-opener on Wednesday. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. in the second half of a doubleheader with the women's soccer team.
