Anderson Reaches Tournament Championship Match

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson University men's soccer team reached the Conference Carolinas Tournament championship game for the first time in the history of the program with a 1-0 victory over Belmont Abbey Friday night at Smethers Field. Anderson, 12-5-2 overall, advances to face top-seeded Lees-McRae Sunday afternoon at Banner Elk, N.C. The Bobcats advanced to the championship match by eliminating Pfeiffer on penalty kicks, 4-3. Anderson lost at Lees-McRae 3-2 on Oct. 25. The loss ends Belmont Abbey's season at 9-10-3. The lone goal of the match was scored at the 1:43 mark. On a restart near the right corner, Lasse Sohrweide played the ball to Kevin Valkenburg, who used a header to score his 10th goal of the season. Neither team was able to mount much of an attack until the final 20 minutes when Belmont Abbey put some pressure on the Anderson defense. Anderson goalkeeper Benjamin Pepion made his lone save late in the match when he stopped a shot off a restart by Kyle Fenner. Pepion, a sophomore from Monaco, France, improved his record to 8-3 and recorded his fourth shutout of the season. Belmont Abbey had seven shots, while Anderson managed just three shots. A total of 35 fouls were called in the match, but no cautions were issued.
