Trojans Drop Opener At Mars Hill, 2-1

MARS HILL, N.C. - Ernest Sobers scored with less than nine minutes left in regulation to lead Mars Hill to a 2-1 victory over Anderson University at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium Thursday night. The match was the season opener for both teams. Paulo Passini put the Trojans up 1-0 at the 3:44 mark when he scored on a header off a cross from Zach Denson. The teams carried that score into the locker room at the intermission. Rury Caulfield tied the match at the 55:40 mark when he scored on a pass sent by Nick Cartwright. Sobers' match winner came off a header from a free kick sent in by Jamal Wiggins. Sean Merfeld played all 90 minutes in goal for MHC and made six saves. Benjamin Pepion also played the entire match in the net for Anderson and made a pair of saves. Anderson out shot MHC 14-12, while MHC edged the Trojans in corner kicks, 5-3. Anderson plays its home opener Saturday night against Newberry. The match will start at 7 p.m.
