Second-Half Outburst Gets AU Past Mount Olive

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Anderson University scored two goals in a two-and-a-half minute span in the second half and went on to post a 3-1 victory over Mount Olive in the first round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament Tuesday night at Smethers Field. Anderson, 11-5-2 overall, advances to face Belmont Abbey in the second round Friday night at Smethers Field. The Crusaders eliminated No. 2 seed Limestone 3-1 on penalty kicks Tuesday afternoon. The loss ends Mount Olive's season at 9-7-3. Anderson scored the lone goal of the first half when Adrien Moufflet passed the ball to Kevin Valkenburg, who hit a one-timer from point-blank range. The goal was Valkenburg's ninth of the season. Mount Olive tied the match at 1 at the 54:09 mark off a restart. Kirk Peterson got the ball to Chris McClaugherty, who touched it to Anthony Payne for the goal. At the 56:19 mark, Anderson got what proved to be the game winner when Valkenburg played a cross that Josh Nguyen flicked to Lasse Sohrweide, who knocked it home for his team-leading 11th goal of the season. Anderson picked up an insurance goal at 58:36. Moufflet hit a corner kick that Sohrweide flicked off his head in front to James Mosley, who sent a header into the net.
